The minutes after a road traffic accident are disorienting — but a handful of simple steps in that first hour can make the difference between a smooth claim and a drawn-out dispute with an insurer months later.

1. Prioritise safety, then documentation

Once everyone involved is safe and any necessary emergency services have been called, start documenting the scene. Photograph vehicle positions, damage, road conditions, and any relevant signage before anything is moved, if it's safe to do so.

2. Exchange the right information

3. Report it — even if it feels minor

Notify your own insurer promptly, even if you believe the accident wasn't your fault. Delayed reporting is one of the most common reasons insurers push back on otherwise straightforward claims.

4. Get checked, even without obvious injury

Some injuries, particularly whiplash and soft tissue damage, don't present symptoms immediately. A medical record close to the time of the accident is also important supporting evidence for a personal injury claim.

5. Speak to a specialist before accepting an offer

Insurers sometimes make an early settlement offer that undervalues a claim, especially where injury or long-term vehicle damage is involved. It costs nothing to have a specialist review an offer before you accept it.

If you've recently been in an accident that wasn't your fault, we're happy to talk it through — no cost, no obligation.
